A practice experience
Divorce ends a marital relationship.
The parenting relationship continues.
You are going to walk through six ordinary moments — a late pickup, a hard question at bedtime, a text that lands wrong. Each one has two roads out of it.
Nobody takes the collaborative road every time. The point isn't to score perfectly. The point is to feel where the fork is, and to notice what your body is doing when you reach it.
Watch the meter marked Your child. You never choose for your child directly. Everything that happens to them happens through what you and the other parent do.

The hand model of the brain
Your lid has flipped.
Adrenaline and cortisol are in your bloodstream. You have tunnel vision. You have stopped listening and you have stopped thinking. In this state the collaborative road is not available to you — not because you're a bad parent, but because the part of your brain that finds it is offline.
Breathe in…
This is the whole skill. Not never getting angry — getting back upstairs before you answer.
